I'd heard that if you were cremated after you'd died that you could be turned into a diamond, but what could more appropriate for an artist than a pencil? Or rather about 250 pencils... The Carbon Copies idea comes from artist Nadine Jarvis (via the blog Drawn!). She says: "I calculated that roughly 250 pencils can be made from someone of average bodyweight, by using the carbon from the cremated remains. You can make a lifetime supply of pencils from one body and that person can go on living through the life of the pencils.
"The idea came from a year-long research project into the concept of state transitions and life-cycles, stemming from a project about 'zero'. I was looking into how people could be kept alive after they are dead using their body matter. I was looking into how a person can be 'backed up' after they are gone."
Nadine's design includes an pencil box which can't be opened but includes a pencil sharpener (see photo on Design Crack). "As you use the pencils, they can be sharpened back into the pencil case, so that over time the pencil sharpenings displace the pencils and the box transforms into an urn containing sharpenings instead of ash. A window in the box acts as a timeline allowing you to see how many pencils are left and the time that has gone by."
The bad news is that Nadine's "art-after-death" pencils and pencil boxes are not yet in production. But maybe by the time her traveling exhibition has ended (it's on its way to Milan from the Design Museum in London, and from there heads to the States) some entrepreneur will make it a reality. Surely there must be enough artists out there who'd like to 'go out in artistic style' for it to be feasible...
