Food Security and Environmental Quality in the Developing World
by Rattan Lal (Editor), David O. Hansen (Editor), Norman Uphoff (Editor), Steven A. Slack

Editorial Reviews

Product Description
Can developing countries meet the food requirements of their growing populations without jeopardizing a natural resource base that is already under great stress? Can increases in food production achieved in the past two decades be sustained in the next two decades? Can developing countries achieve freedom from hunger and malnutrition for their entire populations? How can food security be reconciled with environment quality in an industrializing society? Leading authorities, from soil scientists to economists, address these critical questions in Food Security and Environmental Quality in the Developing World. With a focus on India, this book reviews the state of natural resources, fertilizer and energy needs, and the potential importance of biotechnology as they affect all developing countries. It then addresses issues pertaining to water quality, agricultural chemicals, and pesticide residues on food. Part Three examines water harvesting, post-harvest food losses, storage and processing of animal products, and sustainability and inequality issues. The next sections deal with poverty alleviation, microfinance, gender equity, policy issues, and the role of the public sector. Finally, the book considers emerging issues and priorities. Developing countries have achieved an impressive increase in total food production over the past two decades, but at a high cost to environmental quality. As the populations of these countries continue to grow, soil degradation, pollution and contamination of natural waters, deteriorating air quality, and growing dependence on expensive and diminishing fossil fuels become increasing concerns. Food Security and Environmental Quality in the Developing World takes on the crucial challenge of enhancing agricultural production while reversing the alarming trends in soil and environmental degradation.

Barrier Technologies for Environmental Management: Summary of a Workshop
by Committee on Remediation of Buried and Tank Wastes (Author), National Research Council

Product Description
To control the migration of radioactive and hazardous wastes currently contained underground, barriers made of natural materials and man-made substances are constructed atop, and possibly around, the contaminated area. Barrier Technologies for Environmental Management provides a brief summary of the key issues that arose during the Workshop on Barriers for Long-Term Isolation. Recurring themes from the sessions include the importance of quality control during installation, followed by periodic inspection, maintenance, and monitoring, and documentation of installation and performance data. Barrier Technologies for Environmental Management includes papers by the workshop presenters. FROM THE INTRODUCTION "The Committee on Remediation of Buried Tank Wastes (the "committee") was appointed by the National Research Council and has the general task of addressing critical generic and site-specific issues relevant to remediation of the environmental contamination from buried and tank-contained defense radioactive and mixed waste . . . The committee and representatives of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Environmental Restoration agreed that a workshop on containment barriers would be useful. Participants in such a workshop would include government researchers and contractors, as well as barrier designers and builders from the private sector. The workshop program was designed to cover a wide range of barrier approaches using varius materials, both natural and man-made, and different installation techniques."

Chemistry for the Protection of the Environment 4
(Environmental Science Research)
by Robert Mournighan (Editor), Marzenna R. Dudzinska (Editor), John Barich (Editor), Marjorie A. Gonzalez (Editor), Robin K. Black

Editorial Reviews

Product Description

Chemistry for the Protection of the Environment 4 focuses on:

 Environmental aspects of agricultural practices
Field characterization and quantification of chemical constituents
Fate of contaminants in the environment/environmental monitoring
 Thermal treatment technologies
 Remediation of contaminated sites
 Wastewater treatment and sludge management
 Environmental Security
 Risk Assessment and Environmental Management

This volume is the proceedings of the first CPE conference in the new millennium and the thirteenth in a well-established series of conferences on Chemistry for the Protection of the Environment, first established in 1976. With support of the U.S. EPA, the series of conferences provides an opportunity for interdisciplinary exchange of ideas among international specialists, from diverse fields and backgrounds, on the chemical aspects of environmental protection. Over the years, the CPE conferences have gathered participants from more and more countries, and the scope of interests have been broadened. Held in Hilo, Hawaii, this was the first of these international conferences to take place in the United States. The Organizing Committee attracted to the conference a wide range of talented scientists and engineers who have useful ideas to contribute on how to clean our environment.

Any pollution control or pollution cure action today must take into consideration not only one element of the environment, like water, air or soil but also proper environmental handling and related problems. In all cases, chemical processes play a highly significant role. In recent years there has been a shift from wastewater technologies and pollutant monitoring problems to environment management and solid wastes issues. This book provides a forum for chemical scientists and engineers who are dedicated to the worthy mission of making a cleaner, healthier world for everyone.

The central goals of Chemistry for the Protection of the Environment are to improve technology transfer and scientific dialogue, thereby leading to better comprehension of and solution to a broad spectrum of environmentally related problems.

Introduction to Chemical Transport in the Environment
by John S. Gulliver

Editorial Reviews
Product Description
This is a textbook for courses and independent study in environmental and chemical engineering, as well as in many other disciplines concerned with transport and diffusion of all manner of chemicals. Estimating the transport and fate of chemicals released into the environment is an interesting and challenging task. The global environment is large, on the chemical transport and fate scale. This text applies the mathematics of diffusion, turbulent diffusion and dispersion to the atmosphere, lakes, rivers, groundwater and the ocean, as well as transport between these media. The book follows a new educational paradigm of text books, in that it is based upon examples and case studies. The required theory is explained as a solution technique to solve the case studies and example problems. A large portion of the book is dedicated to examples and case studies, from which the important principles are derived.

The Environment
by
Carolyn Saari

Editorial Reviews
Review
"[Saari's] work collects together cohesively argued ideas on the place of the environment as the primary context in which the person's functioning self unfolds. Her discussion... is fascinating." -- Social Work Review

"Consistent with the paradigmatic emphases, dialogue and narrative are seen as crucial to this process. This material resonates so loudly and validates my own developing views of what great clinical practice is about." -- Kia J. Bentley, Clinical Social Work Journal

Review
"Beginning with an articulate account of the historical and intellectual influences that spawned the creation of psychotherapy as a treatment for psychosocial malaise, Saari presents the inherent conundrum that has plagued the psychotherapeutic enterprise since its inception: Is it a venue for human transformation or an agent of social conformity." -- RoseMarie Perez Foster, Director, Glass Center for Mental Health and Practice Research

"An extremely valuable exploration of a vital interface that has been insufficiently appreciated by psychoanalytic writers. The Environment is an important and clarifying contribution that is both scholarly and clinically relevant." -- Paul L. Wachtel, City College and the CUNY Graduate Center

"Saari argues that, notwithstanding postmodernism's dramatic effect on psychoanalytic theory, there continues an inadequate attention to the environment, to external reality. In her thoughtful review of the literature, she reminds us of some analysts, such as Erikson, who called attention to the surround years ago. But Saari does more, introducing us to writers from other fields whose work has great relevance for us clinicians: some philosophers, and others who study neurological potentials. Teachers will draw on this impressive book and will love how this author offers clinical examples that illustrate her theories about the importance of the environment, and they will themselves enjoy playing with them." -- Jean Sanville, clinical social work analyst

Organic Chemicals: An Environmental Perspective
by Alasdair H. Neilson

Editorial Reviews

Review
monumental, cutting-edge work on the fate and transport of organic chemicals.
--A. S. Casparian, in CHOICE, June 2000
Promo Copy

Product Description
Environmental problems have become increasingly complex. The procedures for investigating these problems cross the traditional boundaries of organic and analytical chemistry, microbiology and biology. Organic Chemicals: An Environmental Perspective brings together the basic issues of chemical analysis, distribution, persistence, and ecotoxicology. The author illustrates each point with specific examples and presents a mechanistic approach to microbial reactions. Extensive cross referencing between chapters provides cohesion and complete coverage of issues tangential to each topic. The new edition has been extensively revised, and contains a new appendix, a new chapter, plus further revised information throughout the book. In fact, it is a completely new book. A major difficulty in environmental science is that much of the background is widely scattered in the specialized chemical, microbiological, and biological literature. The coverage of all these areas in a single volume, the coherence supplied by the cross references, and the extensive references to the original literature makes Organic Chemicals: An Environmental Perspective a unique resource.

Introduction to Environmental Forensics

Introduction to Environmental Forensics, Second Edition

by Brian L. Murphy (Author), Robert D. Morrison

Product Description
Introduction to Environmental Forensics helps readers unravel the complexities of environmental pollution cases. It outlines techniques for identifying the source of a contaminant release, when the release occurred, and the extent of human exposure. Written by leading experts in environmental investigations, the text provides detailed information on chemical "fingerprinting" techniques applicable to ground water, soils, sediments, and air, plus an in-depth look at petroleum hydrocarbons.

It gives the environmental scientist, engineer, and legal specialist a complete toolbox for conducting forensic investigations.
