Horrible Histories: The Vicious Vikings

Terry Deary and Martin Brown's brilliant books about the nastiest periods in history have now - with the help of some astounding actors and directed by Dirk Maggs - been transformed into a series of audio extravaganzas. Featuring new, extra material not found anywhere in the books, these sound spectaculars are just as thrilling and spilling, funny and fast as their printed counterparts.

Horrible Histories are guaranteed to bring you history with the nasty bits left in! Evil dwarves, not-so-jolly-giants, and the ever-present threat of getting a blood eagle (which, as everyone knows, is when you.... No, it's just too horrible to say here) are among the highlights in this extravaganza of Saxon violence.

By spending time in the company of the hairy helmeted horrors from the North you'll learn their first aid methods, some typical Viking names - like Blob Nose - and, best of all, their battle secrets (chopping people's heads off, mostly).

Horrible Histories: The Stormin' Normans

Fascinating facts about big bad Bill the Conqueror and his bully-boys who battled at Hastings. Everyone knows about 1066, and how William the Conqueror's men scored a bull's eye at the Battle of Hastings. Or rather a King's eye. But why did William like conquering so much? Were the Normans abnormal? Probably not - King Harold and his men were just as fond of cutting off bits of people they didn't like. But that didn't help them when it came to the Battle of Hastings, a fight that had more needle than the Bayeux Tapestry. You can also hear about William the Conqueror's disgusting death. But a word of warning: when you open up this audio, hold your nose! History has never been so horrible!

Jeeves: A Gentleman’s Personal Gentleman

Description: This book tells the story of Reginald Jeeves, a valet to several forgettable members of Britain’s gentry. While Parkinson’s account of Mr Jeeves’ life is entertaining, it falls just short of fascinating – the account assumes that the reader is already familiar with certain adventures and people. Mr Jeeves is remarkable for his talent at manipulation and extraction. For instance, Jeeves spends a lot of his time saving one employer from marriage, by using an encyclopedic knowledge of human nature. But Jeeves is not above manipulating his employers into situations that will profit himself. Mr Parkinson has done another admirable biography, even if his subject isn’t as well-known as Admiral Hornblower. The lesson here is that while a person may not be a household name, the biography can still be quite entertaining. If only some writer would come along and tell us more about Mr Jeeves and his adventures!

Paper Towns

Description: Green melds elements from his Looking for Alaska and An Abundance of Katherines— the impossibly sophisticated but unattainable girl, and a life-altering road trip—for another teen-pleasing read. Weeks before graduating from their Orlando-area high school, Quentin Jacobsen's childhood best friend, Margo, reappears in his life, specifically at his window, commanding him to take her on an all-night, score-settling spree. Quentin has loved Margo from not so afar (she lives next door), years after she ditched him for a cooler crowd. Just as suddenly, she disappears again, and the plot's considerable tension derives from Quentin's mission to find out if she's run away or committed suicide. Margo's parents, inured to her extreme behavior, wash their hands, but Quentin thinks she's left him a clue in a highlighted volume of Leaves of Grass. Q's sidekick, Radar, editor of a Wikipedia-like Web site, provides the most intelligent thinking and fuels many hilarious exchanges with Q. The title, which refers to unbuilt subdivisions and copyright trap towns that appear on maps but don't exist, unintentionally underscores the novel's weakness: both milquetoast Q and self-absorbed Margo are types, not fully dimensional characters. Readers who can get past that will enjoy the edgy journey and off-road thinking.

Pompeii

Description: The springs in the towns around Rome are failing. Marcus Attilius, engineer in charge of the aqueduct bringing water from the hills of Vesuvius to the coast, has to fix the problem. His predecessor has disappeared mysteriously, his workmen are a coarse lot of sewer rats, and he's fallen for the daughter of the villainous Ampilatus. In Robert Harris's reconstruction of the days before the massive eruption of Vesuvius, credible human tensions build along with the volcano's deadly pressure. Harris injects arcane facts of feasting, fashion, and political foolhardiness, and John Lee's intelligent performance makes Pompeii more than a run-of-the-mill disaster story. As Ampilatus, his voice drips with decadence, and as Corelia, his daughter, it shines with strength and innocence. Lee makes even the dank tunnels of an aqueduct fascinating.

Old Age and How to Survive It

Description: Cicero remarked that old age is a strange business. No one wants to miss it, he said, and everyone complains about it when they get there...
Old age comes to us all, and Enfield wittily advises on how to survive its trickier obstacles, not least the people who suggest you must 'do something'. One of the great delights of the golden years is doing less - from giving up DIY and ambition to not inviting people to dinner. In these elegantly entertaining essays, Enfield guides those entering their finer years on how to make the most of old age.

The Age Of Wonder: How the Romantic Generation Discovered the Beauty and Terror of Science

Description: Shortlisted for the BBC Samuel Johnson Prize for Non-Fiction Shortlisted for the Royal Society Prize for Science Book Richard Holmes, prize-winning biographer of Coleridge and Shelley, explores the scientific ferment that swept across Britain at the end of the 18th century in his ground-breaking new biography 'The Age of Wonder'. 'The Age of Wonder' is Richard Holmes's first major work of biography in over a decade. It has been inspired by the scientific ferment that swept through Britain at the end of the eighteenth century, 'The Age of Wonder' and which Holmes now radically redefines as 'the revolution of Romantic Science'. The book opens with Joseph Banks, botanist on Captain Cook's first Endeavour voyage, stepping onto a Tahitian beach in 1769, hoping to discover Paradise. Many other voyages of discovery swiftly follow, while Banks, now President of the Royal Society in London, becomes our narrative guide to what truly emerges as an Age of Wonder. Banks introduces us to the two scientific figures that dominate the book: astronomer William Herschel and chemist Humphry Davy. Herschel's tireless dedication to the stars, assisted (and perhaps rivalled) by his comet-finding sister Caroline, changed forever the public conception of the solar system, the Milky Way galaxy and the meaning of the universe itself. Davy first shocked the scientific community with his near-suicidal gas experiments in Bristol, then went on to save thousands of lives with his Safety Lamp and established British chemistry as the leading professional science in Europe. But at the cost, perhaps, of his own heart. Holmes proposes a radical vision of science before Darwin, exploring the earliest ideas of deep time and deep space, the creative rivalry with the French scientific establishment, and the startling impact of discovery on great writers and poets such as Mary Shelley, Coleridge, Byron and Keats. With his trademark sense of the human drama, he shows how great ideas and experiments are born out of lonely passion, how scientific discoveries (and errors) are made, how intense relationships are forged and broken by research, and how religious faith and scientific truth collide. The result is breathtaking in its originality, its story-telling energy, and not least, in its intellectual significance.

Kelso decides to use his last morning in Moscow to check out the old man's story. Landscape Turned Red: The Battle of Antietam

Description: The Civil War battle waged on September 17, 1862, at Antietam Creek, Maryland, was one of the bloodiest in the nation's history: in this single day, the war claimed nearly 23,000 casualties. In Landscape Turned Red, the renowned historian Stephen Sears draws on a remarkable cache of diaries, dispatches, and letters to recreate the vivid drama of Antietam as experienced not only by its leaders but also by its soldiers, both Union and Confederate. Combining brilliant military analysis with narrative history of enormous power, Landscape Turned Red is the definitive work on this climactic and bitter struggle.

Stonehenge: a novel of 2000 B.C.

Stonehenge: a novel of 2000 B.C.

Description: Prolific British author Cornwell is best known for his Napoleonic warfare adventure series with Captain Richard Sharpe, and for the Starbuck Chronicles, about the American Civil War. Now he imaginatively unlocks the mystery of Stonehenge's creation in 2000 B.C., at the beginning of Britain's Bronze Age. This wild tale, rich with sorcery, pagan ritual, greed and intrigue, is Cornwell's most ambitious fiction yet. It features three brothers linked by blood but divided by madness, jealousy and lust for power. Lengar, the eldest, murders his own father to become the chief of his tribe. As a warrior and tyrant, his brutality is second only to that of his crippled brother, Camaban, a sorcerer ruthlessly determined to have a massive stone temple erected to honor his authority. The youngest sibling, Saban, will ultimately construct the temple, but not until he has endured torture, slavery and betrayal. The story covers nearly 20 years as the brothers and the people of Ratharryn struggle to survive as a tribe, fighting harsh weather and starvation, warring with other tribes and trying to appease their angry gods. It is Camaban's idea to build Stonehenge as a temple to create balance between the moon god and the sun god, to eliminate winter and force a change in the circle of life. Murder, magic and misery prevail, and there is no shortage of victims or bloodshed. Cornwell's portrayal of life and death in ancient Britain is graphic, gritty and riveting. However, his detailed descriptions of how Stonehenge was constructed utilizing primitive engineering are the real strength of this book. Although its length may daunt some readers, this ambitious and intriguing saga will be a hit with lovers of ancient history who want to decipher the mysteries of a vanished world.

Short and Shivery: Thirty Chilling Tales

Short and Shivery: Thirty Chilling Tales

Description: A collection of spooky stories, competently adapted and retold (sometimes quite freely) from world folklore, including Japan, Africa, and Latin America, as well as Europe and the U.S. Fairy tales are represented, from Grimm's The Robber Bridegroom to the modern urban folktale Lavender, a reworking of the phantom hitchhiker story. Some tales are familiar, appearing in one form or another in various collections, e.g., Tailypo, but many are not. Stories have also been adapted from the work of Nathaniel Hawthorne, John Bunyan, and Washington Irving. The stories drawn from collections of regional American folklore are not only the freshest, but often the scariest. Sources are fully documented at the back of the book. The cover has just the right touch of gruesomeness to attract readers, with bats, rats, weird faces, and a skeleton arm escaping from the grave. Almost every story is illustrated with a full-page picture in pen-and-ink and wash. These are well crafted but, with some notable exceptions, don't always capture the true terror of the tales, and don't enhance the text in a spine-tingling manner. Many of the stories will be effective as read-alouds. There are some delicious shivers here, with plenty of fodder for an active imagination, as well as excitement.

Transformation Road takes the listener on the long and often tragic journey of Sean Anderson's battle with food and morbid obesity spanning just about his entire life. His experience with declaring war with himself graphically depicts the tortured soul of most of us who face an addictive and pathological relationship with food. Having won many a battle but inevitably losing his war, Sean offers us some insight as to who the real enemy has been.
